The State MP Comrade Christos Pappas, in the Committee on Defense and Foreign Affairs on the ratification of an agreement for the supply of defense material between Russia and Greece, stated the following:
"Mr. President, after I in turn wish a Happy New Year and many happy returns to all our colleagues. And I mean the “colleagues” part, because it stands for brother, in other words, no matter what separates us, no matter how many political differences we may have, and no matter how much hatred some may possibly have in their souls, as it concerns the Golden Dawn party, we believe that we are brothers and should look at what unites us and not what divides us. So, Happy New Year.
Wanting to in turn express, in the short time available to me, the positions of Golden Dawn, and I mean the true positions of Golden Dawn which are clear in regards to our relations with Russia. Firstly, I believe that the current process of discussion for this bill is purely formal, in my opinion, without any substantive content. And I mean that foreign policy, which is the subject of our Commission can’t be erased with pious words, with nice words, verbiage, only protocols and exchanges of commemorative gifts, as we witnessed in the era of the Avramopoulos Ministry. So, certainly a national foreign policy can’t be erased with these methods.
The position of Golden Dawn in the developed global situation, and especially in the Eastern Mediterranean, as it regards to the Russian Federation, is none other than an honorable, fair and sincere alliance with the Russian nation. The former President of the Republic, Mr. Sartzetakis put it correctly, and many politicians agreed, although he was mocked for it, for his well-known phrase, that “the Greek nation is a brotherless nation”. I believe what the former President wanted to stress was the unique and difficult position of Greece, who has the blessing and the curse, as an established State, territorially I mean, of holding a highly strategic position at the crossroads of three continents. Mr. Sartzetakis made one mistake, Greece, the Greek Nation has a brother, and that is the Russian Nation.
This is our position, that the developing situation, in the economic situation, in our defense policy, in the social reality facing our fatherland today, we need to have a national foreign policy and it can be nothing other, then our cooperation with the Russian Federation, and I mean an honorable alliance. If you could give me one more minute, Mr. President, I would like at this point, to describe to you the casualness that many times characterizes the positions of the MPs, with no exception, this includes myself, and even more so the positions in our Commission, which has very slim content. And this example occurred under the government of Samaras, the coalition of Samaras, when our Commission held a closed session in a different chamber of Parliament, where a Russian expert described to us the Russian positions on energy policy. The meeting was closed, without any coverage. We heard from all the parties all the usual pious words that we heard here today, about Orthodoxy, about common bonds and so forth. Alliances aren’t determined by religion, they are determined by interests. When the time came for the positioning of a party representative, who is now a government player, he said: “Why don’t we also give you an island?”. When it was my turn to speak, I said that it’s not the place of any MP to give away islands, that Greece must secure her national independence and sovereignty and that if we ever form an alliance with Russia, it will be on another level. Islands aren’t given away like that. So that the commission is aware.
What I would like to say in closing, and thank you Mr. President for your patience, is that as you are all aware in politics things happen but are never spoken of, just as there are things that are said which never happen. I believe this should be the aim of a national government. In other words, things that happen but aren’t spoken of. And that is the alliance with Russia.
In conclusion, cooperation on all levels, energy, cultural, economic, defense. As it regards defense, since this bill contains positive elements for our defense cooperation with Russia, if it happens and these aren’t just pious words, we vote in favor of it."
