Golden Dawn MEP L. Fountoulis: Inform the workers about dangerous materials - Video
During the sitting of the European Parliament's Employment Committee the floor was given to Golden Dawn’s MEP Lampros Fountoulis. The subject of discussion was the permissible levels in the existence of carcinogens at working places and the MEP asked further reduction for the permitted limits. Furthermore, he asked the initiation of a campaign concerning the workers themselves, so as they implement the appropriate security measures. Which it often doesn’t happens .The president of the committee had no other choice than to agree with the statement, since the proposals listed were for the benefit of the workers.
Follows the full text of the intervention and the response of the President:
Lampros Fountoulis:
I am glad about this discussion and I agree with the previous speakers. I agree with the reduction on permissible levels of carcinogenic substances and we have to give priority at these substances that have been proven to be harmful. At the same time, I would like to propose an information campaign concerning the safety measures in places of work and about their implementation by the employees themselves, who either because of ignorance or indifference or by thinking that this couldn’t happen to them, they are faced with the disease. Work-related cancer is very sneaky because many times, it begins to manifest after the end of working life. In addition, it is wrong to discuss about costs and benefits when we speak about human lives, because human life is priceless.
President:
It makes me worry that, more and more often young people have cancer. I know that many times using protective equipment, for example headphones, masks and other such protective equipment is not considered in fashion, so young workers do not put them on. It is not possible to do such things. So we have on one hand to do a campaign to inform them and on the other to insist on more rigorous application of the regulations for the protective equipment. It’s not possible to allow that, just because they don’t like it, not to wear the protective equipment, we have to do everything we can and to think about it!
