Golden Dawn paid homage with her presence and with the placing of the wreath by MP Aetolia-Acarnania Barmparousis, elected Municipal Councilor Dimitris Makris, and the secretary of the Messolonghi Local Organization, Dionysis Valtogiannis, for the 190th anniversary of the historic Battle at Dolmas, a battle overshadowed only be the epic Messolonghi Exodus.
Following the doxology at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Theotokos and the announcement of the celebration, a procession of uniformed units took place at the Square named after the to Hero of the Battle, Gregorios Liakatas, at the Monument erected in his honor.
Afterwards a memorial took place at the Column of the Fallen of Dolmas, followed by the wreath placing. The event ended with a minute of silence and our National Anthem.
A few words about the historic battle:
On 2-28-1826 the Turko-Albanians set their cannons in Finikia and from there challenged the defenders of the islet. Meanwhile, two thousand Arabs with small boats without keels approached from the sea. The fierce battle that followed resulted in the Arabs slaughtering the heroes who defended the only supply route that remained to the besieged Messolonghi. Only four were taken alive. Chieftain Grigoris Liakatas dying words were: “Leonidas you also had three hundred men, come now and let’s share the glory”.
Faithful to the ideals of our Fatherland, held since ancient times, the defenders of the Dolmas fought and fell trying to hold the strategically important islet. Shortly after the Battle of Dolmas, Messolonghi too fell.
