Lucian, Menippus and the Memorandum – Article by N. G. Michaloliakos

‘’You cannot get blood from a stone’’

Τhe Memorandum of the Left is harder comparing to the other memoranda, which was voted by SYRIZA, New Democracy, ANEL, PASOK and Potami on August 14, 2015! The sequel will be shown in the coming months with the submission of the implementing laws in accordance with the requirements of the Memorandum. What the lenders require through the supposedly leftist government, that it would supposedly terminate the memoranda, are at least inordinate. Inordinate to an extent that the Greek people cannot respond.

On the occasion, the leftist Memorandum reminded me an extract of the dialogues of the dead by Lucian. The protagonist of the story was the cynic philosopher Menippus, who was a real person according to the lives of eminent philosophers by Diogenes Laertius and whose work has been lost. The ancient Greeks used to place on the dead body of their relatives an obol. This obol was the price in order to pass to the other world the dead relative. Menippus in order to cheat Charon and return alive did not have on his body the obol. So, an intense dialogue between the dead and Menippus followed. But Menippus responded with a disarming logic saying “you cannot get blood from a stone”.

And so now, the Greek people is currently heading towards economic disaster that is not far away from an economic death taking into account the exorbitant debt. Heading therefor to the economic death, since this is and this has been proved in the last five years that the policy of the memoranda, ask the Greek people to give its own…obol. Which in this case is a tax storm that includes amounts that are impossible to be paid by the Greek taxpayer.

Among these, there is the increased taxation of the farmers and the termination at the same time of the tax cuts including the gas oil. At the same time they want to raise the insurance fees of the farmers, bringing them in difficult circumstances. The same applies to the self-employed. The most excessive measure is the tax advance for the next year! Which deposit will start for the farmers by 50%, for the freelancers by 75% and will reach 100%! This measure does not have any sense, since nobody knows how much will be his income within the next year! The freelancers see their jobs being reduced and it is certain that they will not have the same income in the next year. As for the farmers, there are few years when the natural disasters destroy their crops, needless to refer to other events that may occur. A typical example of the economic measures against Russia that led it, from the side of Russia, not to allow the import of Greek fruits.

In conclusion, the leftist Memorandum is destined to fail, but unfortunately this failure is going to lead the country in conditions of a literally economic slavery.
