The creation of the new centers will be made based on population criteria.  The aim of the government is for each structure to accommodate 500 to 1,000 people so the camps don’t become “small cities”.  

 

The implementation will initiate in September.

 

The spokesperson of the coordinating body for the “refugee crisis”, Giorgos Kyritsis in statements notes that many of the old structures were built “hastily” and therefore don’t satisfy decent living conditions, while on the contrary the new hospitality areas will offer container homes, and not tents.

 

In the current phase, as he said, there is a reassessment of existing camps to determine what can still be used after minor upgrades, and what should be removed.  Maintaining some

of the existing centers as spare hospitality areas isn’t being ruled out.

 

Meanwhile, of illegal immigration flows continue with increased rates towards the Greek islands following the failed coup in Turkey, as indicated by the data released by the governmental body for the refugee crisis.

 

The arrivals to the Greek shores more than doubled between the first half of July and the second half of the month which followed the coup, rising from 634 to 1,277. The first 20 days of August saw the number of arrivals reached 2,100, an average of more than 200 arrivals a day.
