The Cost of Child Birth for Uninsured Greek Women is €600, But Free for “Irregular Migrants”!

There is a constant increase in reports of helpless women who managed to arrive in the country and give birth safely in one of the country’s hospitals. Indeed, this type of news is purportedly moving and deeply human. In reality, however, these are women that know their due dates (these are scheduled births), who illegally enter a foreign country risking their life and that of the fetus, who are prepared to pay substantial sums of money to traffickers, but then demand from the country hosting them of care for all their needs free of charge. Incredibly, the Greek State is hastening to meet their needs, while at the same time are completely indifferent towards the insured and uninsured pregnant Greek women.
Of course motherhood is sacred and every woman is entitled to a calm and safe childbirth, however, if those responsible would like to be considered humanitarians, they first should ensure it for all the country’s citizens. Essentially, the uninsured Greek women are forced to pay about €600 for a natural birth, while having to take into account all shortages and weaknesses of the public hospitals. As it relates to Ticket Free Access, the pregnant beneficiaries’ labor costs aren’t covered, or the hospital care of their newborn infants. However, the pregnant women entering the country illegally have all they needs to give birth comfortably and calmly, these benefits are out of reach for Greek women, who make great efforts to cover the costs of this procedure.
In a country facing the serious problem of a low birthrate and an aging population, the State should be covering childbirth expenses, prenatal and perinatal examinations and hospital care of newborn babies, in order to assist and standing next to the Greek women and mothers in the sacred work they do.
