The dialog of a poet with a statue-From Greece of 1907 to Greece of 2017! Article of N.G. Michaloliakos

We are in Greece, at 1907, only ten years after the humiliating defeat at the Greco-Turkish war of 1897 and with the recent blood of Pavlos Melas, blood spilt for our Macedonia, whose sacred name is being sold nowadays at the political markets. 

 

Greece is fainting while our national economy is under international economical control. Yet there few who still hope and among them a Poet, Kostis Palamas. At 1907 Kostis Palamas publishes a poetry collection, called SATYRIKA GYMNASMATA, where in one of these poems he describes a dialog with the copper statue of Theodoros Kolokotronis at Stadiou Street. It is placed in the Kolokotronis square, a square especially important for our Movement, since there started the march of GOLDEN DAWN towards the People. 

 

The poet expresses his queries to the Hero and the following dialog is extremely meaningful since it gives an answer to the question about the solution at these harsh and miserable times. But let us read the poem of Kostis Palamas, the imaginary dialogue with Theodoros Kolokotronis:

 

SATYRIKA GYMNASMATA 1907

 

“The eternally copper horseman

Thy thoughtful Kolokotronis

-When will you sail with the wind?

 

You raise your hand.

-Away, far away, away!

To the holy lands. Inapproachable. Untouchable.

 

Towards war, everyone’s father

Towards the roots, the illiterate wisdom,

Towards the warriors, the threats of the Turks! 

 

Around and in front of you the State.

With the grant palaces,

The schools, the theaters, the ministries. 

 

His answer-Axe and Fire!”

 

General Theodoros Kolokotronis responded to Kostis Palamas that the solution was “Axe and Fire”. And this at 1907, as a way out from this dead end of slavery, as an escape to the dream and from the nothingness misery to History! Greece of 1907 and Greece of 2017, then and now the bankruptcy and the defeat are present. Is there any hope?

 

The answer is given by Theodoros Kolokotronis. Only when the State gets purified from anything rotten and corrupted, only then the slave shall raise his head  and shall become free again.
